Why we do VBS differently…

For the past 10 years, Vacation Bible School (VBS) has been an important part of Crossroads Calvary Chapel.  When we started our first VBS, shortly after the planting of the church, we did it to minister to the children of our church. We wanted to share the love of Jesus with them! Like many other churches, our daytime program was fun for us and the children who came.  However, we came out of that first VBS with a vision for something even better.  When it came time to plan VBS the next year, we made the conscious decision to move it to the evenings.  Our decision was based upon the desire to see more of our adults, especially the men, become involved.  And to be able to spread the Gospel beyond our church family.   That decision was one of the best we ever made.

We desire VBS to be an exciting week of Bible stories, songs, snacks, crafts, and games for all the children and youth who attend.  Age specific groups go through the rotations, all centered around the theme for the year. Most importantly, we want them to learn about Jesus and leave knowing songs that will continue to remind them of Jesus in their lives.  It’s an exciting time for all.  Over the years, we have not been disappointed, as we have seen hundreds of kids, many coming back year after year, not only from our church family but from other surrounding communities, singing and talking about Jesus!

For our church family, VBS has become much more than just one exciting week in July.  During the weeks leading up to and into July, our church family gets totally involved in prayer and preparation.  We are known to go “over the top” in our decorating.  Much time is spent together in transforming our building to match the theme.  We’ve seen rooms turned into beaches; we’ve built life size locomotives that the kids could climb on; barns and corrals, water falls, roller coasters, and much more, have all made their way into our building!  It has truly been an awesome experience for our church family.
